Feature & Follow - Oct. 12, 2012

Q: What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie? Please explain in graphic detail of goriness…

Ok, I'm not good at writing graphic goriness, because I love just traditional zombie-ness and all its goodness. So, with that considered, I would go with Jonathan Maberry's Rot & Ruin. One, I love the story in it, some of it is cliche, but I love its flow and concepts. Two, I absolutely love the characters and already have my dream list of actors to play the characters. Due to my general boring-ness of an answer, please inform me of what your dream Halloween-book-to-movie selection would be!

Q. Do you have a favorite series that you read over and over again? Tell us a bit about it and why you keep on revisiting it?

Absolutely. The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa, hands down. The characters (ok, maybe just Ash) makes me want to be there and experience everything that they're going through. With Kagawa's writing, I can honestly say it really does feel like I am. I love several other realms, but this is the one series that takes my breath away each time I read the books. I love the LOTR world, but it's not written in a way I'd like to read it very often. Harry Potter would be an obvious choice for me, but I find that I don't turn to those books very often, especially Deathly Hallows.

Q. It's that pesky magic book fairy again! She has another wish: What imaginary book world would you like to make a reality?

Easy. The Lord of the Rings world. There are others that come close to competing with this, but they never actually can. There's no question that I would live in Rohan. I've always felt the closest connection to it because of their strength and respect for horses. Coming in at the second and third spots would be J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa. Both I would fit into easily, but I don't feel that "umph" like I do when I think of LOTR. :)

Q. Have you ever wanted a villain to win at the end of a story? If so, which one??

Not that I know of. There's been many villains that I have loved reading about or respected because they're so good they give me chills. I'm too involved with good, happy endings for a villain to win. It is what they are supposed to do, be vanquished. :)

Q. Many of us primarily read one genre of books, with others sprinkled in. If authors stopped writing that genre, what genre would you start reading? Or would you give up reading completely if you couldn’t read that genre anymore?

I'm very eclectic with my genres. Romance is a consistent one through all of them though. It's what I started reading way back in the day. I mainly look for good story lines with great characters. Whatever genre I could find that in, I would be happy.

Q. If you could change the ending of any book (or series), which book would you choose? Why and to what?

I have had this thought many of times as I've finished books. The latest one would probably be Forever by Maggie Stiefvater. I can see why she did what she did, but there's still so many unanswered questions.

-Possible Spoiler-
What happens with Cole and Isabel? Did the cure work??? UGH. It just made me wonder so much! However, I was lucky enough to meet Maggie in Nashville at the beginning of August. I asked her about this and she had a simple answer for my problems. She said it just had to have ended that way and would we have seriously wanted the Harry Potter and family van ending? Ok, she got me there... LOL

Q. What are you most looking forward to this fall/autumn season – A particular book release? Halloween? The leaves changing color? Cooler temperatures? A vacation? (If your next season is other than fall/autumn, tell us about it and what you are most looking forward to in your part of the world!)

All of it! Fall is my favorite time of year. Halloween is quickly becoming one of the most awesome events at our house! Growing up, the best holiday was Christmas, but in the last couple of years I've learned why everyone else loves Halloween so much. I also live in the Appalachia area and love getting to see the rainbow of colors year round and the moderate temps we experience. :)

Q.In books like the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series the paranormal creature in question "comes out of the closet" and makes itself known to the world. Which mythical creature do you wish would come out of the closet, for real?

Ok, this is difficult for me to narrow down. I think I will stick to the first answer that came to mind instead of wrestling back and forth. Pegasus has always been my favorite for a lot of reasons. I love horses in general and it's always been my childhood dream to be able to ride and fly. To me, that would absolutely be surreal. :)

Q. Let's step away from books for a second and get personal. What T-Shirt slogan best describes you?

I'll stay polite and professional as much as I can with this one. Having worked in law enforcement for almost 10 years, I would definitely say that this profession describes a lot about me and who I am as a person. Sadly, most phrases related to this field are not appropriate for fans of all ages. (Vulgarity: a side-effect of working in this field? LOL) So here's one of my all time favorites:
There's also inside jokes to go along with this, but I would have to do a completely separate post to explain it all. LOL So we'll leave it at this for now..... :)

Q. Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?

I wouldn't want to have a meal probably, it would definitely be wasted. There is no way in the world that I could sit with one of my favorite authors and be able to stuff my face. (I am a huge foodie, so that is saying a lot for me.) Nora Roberts has always been one of my favorite authors. I have one large and loaded bookshelf full of her books. I would love to just see where all the characters come from and how she can flip from the super romances right into the awesome paranormals she write. Another that will probably a favorite for this is, of course, J.K. Rowling. Not only is she the birthplace of a world I know I am meant to live in, but she also is quite an amazing person. I've heard her say she's still afraid of being broke and going hungry to this day. I don't know what she's actually like, but I get the most amazing feeling of humbleness when I see her. A third author is actually really hard to choose. There's so many after my top two that it's a very difficult decision. So for the sake of this meme, I'll go with Cassandra Clare. This woman actually cracks me up in her books, blog, and on Twitter. I literally laugh out loud with the quirks she puts in her books, but it's seeing her interact with us and other fans that wins me over. I love when there's an author that loves to be as involved with their fans as much as they are their writing. :)

Q. What do you do when you are not reading?

Well, this is easy and difficult at the same time. Before the busy last couple of weeks came about, I usually did things with the hubby or friends. Now, this includes anything from annoying him while he's watching his cartoons (I promise that I'm not making that up LOL), going out to lunch, or having one heckuva pow-wow with friends about life events or, more commonly, school stuff.

However, there is one true thing that I always fall back on if all else fails: art. I was the art geek all through school. For some reason, once people learn this about me they are genuinely surprised and I honestly do not know why. LOL Apparently it's not a vibe that I give off or something. It is still hard for me to walk by certain paintings and ceramics without stopping to study and critique them. It can certainly make for a long shopping trip through some stores!

Q: When did you realize reading was your passion and a truly important part of your life?

Well, that's a good question. I don't think there was ever a point where I realized "I love this", because it's always been such a staple in my life. The closest answer to this for me is probably high school. I was so busy and involved in activities that I realized I missed being able to read what I want instead of what I was being told to read. I guess it's so weird that I think that is one of the few reasons I wish I was finished with graduate school already....I know my reading is going to cut back a lot this fall.

Q: In light of the Summer Solstice. Also known as Midsummer...let's talk about fairies. What is your favorite fairy tale or story that revolves around the fae?

There's not a particular fairy tale that I fell in love with as a kid. I loved reading or having them all read to me as much as possible! If I had to pick a particular fairy, it would be Tinkerbell. She's fights for what she believes in and still has a heart of gold.

It wasn't until lately, however, that I actually started reading books about the fae again....And boy, what a welcome I got! I was introduced to the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. The characters and the world Kagawa created fascinates me. The story is written so intricately that I feel like I am involved in the adventures as much as Meghan, Ash, and Puck. Needless to say, I am addicted. I've picked up a couple more books with fae in them, but I am open to suggestions for others!

Q: How many books are currently in your To-Be-Read (TBR) pile?

General answer? TOOoooooo many....there's not enough hours in the day, week, month, or year to get caught up on all that I want to read. If you want to be literal about it, according to my Goodreads.com account that is fairly updated: 475. NOW, granted, this does include books that I read years and years ago that I want to re-read. I usually take new books over those usually and figure that I'll get back to others (Yeah, right. Reference second sentence of this paragraph. LOL).

Q. Genre Wars! What's your favorite genre and which book in that genre made it your favorite?

Wow, way to make it a toughie! I love so many, it's really hard to decide on a single one. If I had to list a few top choices it would be paranormal, steampunk urban fantasy, or dystopian YA. I used to be really deep into adult romance of all kinds, especially historical. Buuuttttt....then I decided to finish my Bachelor's. For some reason I couldn't wrap my mind around a lot of the books that came out in that. I was griping about that very thing in class one day and a friend recommended I look into YA. She said that maybe all I needed was something different since school had probably "messed with my head." (Yeah, we college students with great vocabularies, right?) She loaned me her copy of Marked by P.C. & Kristin Cast and the rest, as they say, is history. In YA in general, I found that my mind is put at ease when I read them. I now enjoy reading more now, and I honestly did not think that was possible!

-Congrats to Parajunkee on the 50th FF post!
